Powered by NVIDIA® SLI™-Ready GeForce® 8800 series graphics processing units, the Asus 8800 series comes with 768MB GDDR3 memory enabling rapid frame rates and with GigaThread™ technology supporting thousands of independent, simultaneous threads, maximizing GPU utilization to provide extreme processing efficiency in advanced, next generation shader programs.
It has Nvidia's entirely unified and threaded architecture with Direct3D 10 and Shader Model 4 support. As the 8800 GTX version of the G80, it boasts 128 scalar ALUs, the unusual multi-speed core running at 575MHz but with 1,350MHz shader units, and 900MHz memory (1,800MHz effectively with dual-pumping). It boasts 24 ROPs rather than the previous Nvidia generation's 16, so can realise more of its shader power in brute pixel throughput. This also allows a couple of extra anti-aliasing modes (8x MSAA and the new CSAA).
NVIDIA's GeForce 8800 GTX is the most powerful graphics card to date with performance up to 3x that of present high-end cards. To achieve such power in its next-generation design, NVIDIA has architected a graphics card that can require >150W at peak load, with power fed through twin 6-pin PCIe connectors. G80 cards, therefore, require a high-quality PSU that's capable of delivering clean current on the crucial 12V line. In keeping with a high-performance system built around G80, SCAN recommends 500W PSUs with, preferably, 4 individual 12V rails.
